Brands | PRS/Paul Reed Smith
Paul Reed Smith began his guitar making business in 1985 and his company would become a well-known manufacturer of high quality electric guitars. g his first guitar in college, he went on to run Paul Reed Smith Guitars, dubbed PRS Guitars for short, from his home in Annapolis, Maryland along with his friend John Ingram. Ted Nugent tested out the second guitar the pair made, drumming up attention from other professional musicians. Peter Frampton was among some of the early customers, purchasing a guitar made for him in 1976. Al DiMeola brought the company to the forefront after ordering a 12 string version. He spread the word that PRS Guitars would “build the guitar of anyone’s dreams.” In 1980, Smith was honored to make a guitar for Carlos Santana who later, because he was so impressed, came back for a custom made model to use as his main guitar. To date, the list of well-known musicians that use guitars made by PRS is quite extensive, including Chad Kroeger of Nickleback, Brad Whitford of Areosmith, and Alex Lifeson of Rush. PRS Guitars still base their operation in Maryland, in the city of Stevensville.
